Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park has hired a new Curator of Sculpture and Exhibitions. Dr. Jochen Wierich comes to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park with an extensive curatorial background.
“For me to be here and to actually be involved as a curator and kind of shape the sculpture program is just kind of a dream."
Dr. Wierich is known for his work at the historic Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art in Nashville, Tennessee. He tells us its footprint with its sculpture trail is similar to the Meijer Gardens experience.
“Those types of venues where art, history, and historic landscape and sculpture, where they merge, those are the kinds of places where I thrive and I like to work across these different disciplines and bring them into composition and allow visitors to really have an immersive experience in these different areas.”
That includes bringing in art unique to the region.
“So, having a little bit more of an aspiration to also be a place to bring in art that is of a national and international caliber. All of that combined, to me it made a lot of sense to come here, to Meijer Gardens, and continue along those lines.”
Dr. Wierich also coordinated and directed exhibitions at Mississippi Museum of Art and the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture in Spokane, WA.
