Election results could take days, says Whitmer and Benson

Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson say people should expect election results to take a few days to be tallied and announced this November. They renewed their request for changes to election rules in an op-ed published this weekend. The open letter was published in the Sunday Detroit Free Press.

The two Democrats asked the Republican-controlled Legislature to allow absentee ballot envelopes to be opened and made ready to be processed on Election Day. They also want every ballot counted that’s postmarked by 8 p-m and arrives within 48 hours of polls closing. Benson told CNN that counting the votes will be a challenge and it could be days before final results can be announced.

“We’re anticipating that we’re going to have twice as many ballots sent through the mail or voted early than ever before then in the history of our state.”

Benson says Michigan’s voting rules and infrastructure need an update, and that should be dealt with before instead of after the election.
