The impending change in control of the state House might make the Michigan legislature more productive, but the incoming House Speaker isn’t guaranteeing bi-partisanship

As speaker, Republican Matt Hall slowed the state house to a crawl, leading to historically low levels of legislation passed in 2025. This year isn’t shaping up to be much different. Hall's said he's focused on quality over quantity.

But Republicans kicked Hall out of leadership this week, electing Tom Kunse to be minority leader.

Starting next year, Democrats will be in charge.

Speaker-elect Ranjeev Puri says he’ll be open to bi-partisan bills, but doesn’t need GOP votes:

“If Minority Leader Kunse is ready to to work for Team Michigan, he will have partners in in the House Democrats.”

Puri says bringing costs down and shoring up health care access will be priorities in the new year.
