“We’ve seen a lot of issues related to data center development and algorithm bias.”
Kareem Scales is CEO of Scales Consulting and an organizer for Grand Valley State University’s “Humans in the Lead: Community AI Summit.”
“Often times, those conversations have been happening kind of behind the scenes, and we thought it was appropriate to bring that to the forefront, and not just for those who typically are invited to these conversations, but to bring community to the table as well.”
The summit focused on how artificial intelligence is shaping communities, from economic development and workforce readiness to civil rights and environmental stability.
“I think, ultimately, people see that, if we’re going to go in this direction of building out AI, we need to do it in a more sustainable way.”
Mark Richards is a political science professor at GVSU.
“We’ve just seen with the election results that there were over 40 ballot measures across the country on data centers and all of them went against data centers except one, so I think big tech has some work to do to convince people that, if we’re going to go ahead with this, we’re going to do it the right way and in a way that will benefit the community.”
