East Grand Rapids City Manager Shea Charles informed commissioners of the developer’s decision to appeal Kent County Circuit Court Judge George Quist’s ruling. The developer wants to build what has become a controversial mixed-use project. But a zoning protest petition signed by 1,500 residents opposing the Gaslight Village development was found valid by the judge, voiding the commission’s previous approval.
“If you want to appeal it, I’m going to ask you not to because the developer is going to.”
Nearly a dozen residents like Janet Deitch asked the commission to vote not to appeal the judge’s ruling, arguing that no more taxpayer money should be spent on the case.
Commissioner Laura Schwartz: “At this point, I think the best thing for our community is for the city to not appeal. I would very much like to move forward and have some closure on this chapter so that we can all come back together.”
Commissioners voted unanimously not to appeal the decision.
We reached out to Gaslight Investors co-founder Scott Wierda but did not hear back in time for this story.
