“Really what we’re doing is making sure that the people who come to our campus and want to be in our campus are our students and student’s guests and we’re just reinforcing our policies that we already have.”
Dr. Jenny Hall-Jones is Vice President of Student Affairs at Grand Valley State University. After an incident last month where a man who was not a student brought a gun to a dorm and reportedly made a threat, along with multiple vehicle break-ins and a fight involving bats and a knife, security was increased and existing rules are being reinforced.
“And as a result of that, we have separated with about 15 students as of this week.“
Last month, a new rule limiting the number of people gathering in common areas to 10 or less after 10 p.m. was enacted. GVSU will also enforce its visitor and guest policy, only allowing students, faculty, contractors, and pre-registered guests on campus between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.
“I would say that we have definitely seen an uptick in non-student behavior that has caused some problems, which is one of the reasons why we’ve implemented a little bit more enforcement of our existing rules.“
During these weekend enforcement hours, the Lake Michigan Drive arch entrance will serve as the only public entrance to the Allendale campus. GVSU students are encouraged to always carry their school ID while on campus.
