A new art installation with a powerful message has a new home at Grand Rapids’ YWCA West Central Michigan, sharing stories from domestic violence and sexual assault survivors

Women’s Woven Voices is a tapestry representing healing, resilience and the power of women’s stories.

“I am the artist who gathered and put together the story cloths that were woven by 1,100 women from 10 different countries."

Brecia Kralovic-Logan has travelled the world with her tapestry and is now donating sections to groups sharing her mission.

Grand Rapids’ YWCA is the first.

“The beauty of all these stories stitched together into one unified piece, and I think that's really the message: women who are experiencing any kind of inequity, exploitation, abuse, or violence are not alone, and that every person's voice matters.”

The piece aligns with the YWCA’s mission to support survivors and empower women says Board President Gretchen Murphy.

“The way that art can speak the way words cannot, the representation of each individual that told their story through their hands and through their colors, through their choices, says so much about their healing process.”

As part of that mission, the YWCA answered 6,500 crisis calls last year, and provided sexual assault exams to 273 adults and 194 children – a 32% increase from the prior year.

Murphy emphasizes solutions involve partnerships.

“No one organization can solve for this alone. It’s working together. It's every person playing a role in being the avenue for support and ending the chain of violence.”
