“West Michigan Community Cash is a program that keeps dollars into our local community. So, think of like a gift card that can only be used at your local shops.”
Alex Benda is an Economic Growth Business Consultant with the Grand Rapids Chamber. Thanks to local program sponsors and a grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Chamber has $10,000 in matching funds available.
“Every $20 that you purchase in the program, you’re going to get $20 up to $200.”
The Chamber partners with nearly 50 West Michigan businesses for its Community Cash program, which began two years ago. Benda says it’s keeping local dollars… local.
“We have $126,000 in the program that have been issued currently in circulation, so that $126,000 is spread amongst about 4,000 certificates, and the average certificate is $36.”
Buddy Haskill, general manager of LEGO shop Bricks & Minifigs, says the program has benefits beyond monetary.
“It’s our goal to really grow the local, creative community and this is a really good way to connect with people who are local to greater Grand Rapids/West Michigan area.”
While the Community Cash program runs indefinitely, the double-up promotion ends once the Chamber’s MEDC funds are spent.
