Zeeland Township Supervisor Kerri Bosma signed and sent a letter to President Donald Trump asking him to visit Zeeland and talk with residents about a proposed 1,900-acre solar farm.
Germany-based RWE Solar has proposed a $300 million solar farm constructed on Ottawa County farmland in Zeeland and Jamestown townships. The company could bypass the township’s permitting process by seeking approval through the state’s Public Act 233, allowing the Michigan Public Service Commission to approve renewable energy projects.
The letter states in part, “We are concerned about the project’s long-term negative impacts on farming, community character, local infrastructure and food production. We would welcome the opportunity to show you first-hand the farmland and community that our residents are working to preserve for future generations.”
Zeeland Township filed a lawsuit against RWE challenging the constitutionality of PA 233. RWE recently filed a motion to have the lawsuit dismissed.
