The month-long process of tearing down the former Kent Community Hospital is expected to begin in the next few weeks. The building was shuttered in 2024 after tenant Corewell Health moved out.
In its place, Kent County officials are proposing a four-story, 120,000-square-foot building to be used as the county’s new administrative offices, which will house around 200 staff members.
A 2023 space needs assessment found the current administration building on Monroe Avenue in downtown Grand Rapids lacked convenient parking and accessibility with a confusing layout for residents seeking assistance. The assessment suggested relocating operations to the Fuller campus to provide free parking and streamline county services.
Construction of the new administration building is expected to begin in March. Once complete, the Monroe Avenue building will be renovated and used to house county court services, which currently resides at 82 Ionia Avenue. That building will be put up for sale.
Total estimated cost of the project is $120 million, with most of the funding coming from county-issued bonds.
