“One of my goals as governor will be to make sure communities like Muskegon that have so much to offer the state but have been under-resourced and without a lot of attention over the last several years have attention and support to grow our economy, to create greater spaces for people to live, and regenerate this local economy.”
While touring the Shaw housing development currently under construction in Muskegon, Michigan Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson said tariffs are affecting the timely building of affordable housing throughout the state. She also said the process of building new housing needs to be streamlined.
“So, streamlining how permits are given, as well as other types of approvals and processes, make it easier for developments like this to grow quickly.”
Benson says this will lead to more workforce housing, setting off a chain reaction of more affordable housing for all.
“But it also frees up the market of other homes that people can leave and then move into. If you’re moving into a new development, that opens up housing; starter homes or second homes for families who want to move into Muskegon.”
When complete, the Shaw development will consist of over 500 residential units, 37 townhomes, and retail and commercial space.
