Starting September 9th, travelers can check in at kiosks, tag their own luggage and use automated bag drops, streamlining the check-in process.
That’s the sound of the new Consolidated Baggage Inspection System at the heart of the $135 million Terminal Enhancement Project.
Airport Authority President Tory Richardson says the new system strengthens security and improves efficiency.
“Together these improvements allow us to increase baggage processing from approximately 600 bags an hour to nearly 1,000 bags an hour when the system is fully operational.”
Ford International is the first American airport to pair the technology with self-serve bag checking.
Richardson says more upgrades are to come.
“The new ticket counter spaces will eventually consolidate all our ticketing functions into one area and that will give us the opportunity to expand our baggage claim areas once those airlines are out and improve that part of the terminal as well.”
American, United and Frontier passengers will use the system first with more airlines transitioning by the end of 2027.
The project is part of the airport’s $600 million ELEVATE program funded by grants, bonds and user fees not local taxes.
