In 2024, Grand Rapids-based nonprofit Our Hope opened 10 beds in their Walker location dedicated to substance detoxification services for women. Two years later, it’s discontinuing those efforts.
“We really had to turn our focus in sustaining what we’ve been doing for over 50 years, which is our 90-day residential program at two locations.”
Rosemary Hodges is executive director at Our Hope. She explains that while they did not lose any federal funding for their programs…
“We have not had an increase in Medicaid reimbursement in about nine years.”
Another major factor in the nonprofit’s decision stems from financial sustainability and utilization challenges.
“It’s not that the patients aren’t there. It’s just that there’s a stigma with women especially to come in and say, ‘You know what? I want to go through detox.’ We may have had three or four women scheduled that day to be evaluated to go to detox, and nobody would show up. So, it’s a very hard service line, but it’s a service line that is needed tremendously in the community.”
Our Hope will continue providing residential treatment and recovery support services for women as it works with referral partners ensuring continuity of care for women requiring detox services.
