The new West Michigan addiction recovery program is helping adults heal while keeping their daily routines

Grand Rapids-based Wedgwood Christian Services is launching an Adult Intensive Outpatient Program for people dealing with substance use, bridging the gap for those needing more support than traditional weekly counseling without moving into a residential facility.

Nick Bayer, Associate Director of Clinical Services, says research finds it stabilizes 75% of clients - either as primary treatment or a bridge back to daily life.

“It's also really helpful for those that have maybe spent some time in that residential setting, having that 24/7 focus on recovery. Then when they return here to the Grand Rapids community or surrounding communities, having more intense support as opposed to having that intensive 24/7 recovery mindset and then just being discharged back to a community where that's not occurring anymore.”

The program combines trauma and addiction therapy, allowing patients to stay connected to their daily routines while learning coping skills and building critical peer support.

“It's one thing to learn about what strategies have been effective for someone who's leading a group that may or may not have had that exact lived experience. It's another thing to hear what's working well with someone who is currently going through those same things and has that understanding.”

Sessions run three hours a day, three days a week with both in-person and virtual options.
