During a roundtable at State Senator Roger Victory’s Hudsonville farm, agriculture leaders voiced concerns over rising diesel and fertilizer costs, farmland loss to energy development and overreach from the state’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE).
James promised to re-structure the department if elected governor.
“I have talked to people all over the state from farms to factories that say they have issues with EGLE. We’re going to be addressing those on Day One. EGLE needs to focus on helping, being more customer service- oriented and focusing more on conservation and stewardship than protectionism.”
According to the Michigan Farm Bureau, agriculture remains Michigan’s second-largest industry behind manufacturing, contributing over $125 billion annually to the economy and employing nearly 1 million people.
