Parasitic disease outbreak hits Michigan hardest

Cyclosporiasis does not spread from person to person

An outbreak of a parasitic gastro-intestinal disease is growing across the U.S.

Cyclosporiasis causes weight loss, cramping and what’s known as “explosive” diarrhea.

It’s affecting over 30 states, but has hit Michigan hardest. Cases here have doubled in less than a week to more than 3,300.

Wayne State University Doctor Teena Chopra says the parasite causing the illness most likely came from fresh produce.

But she says pinpointing the exact source is difficult.

“They had to interview a thousand people to come to this conclusion that it might be lettuce or cabbage or some green leafy salad.”

The disease does not spread from person to person and can take weeks for symptoms to develop.
