Could Michigan lower its BAC limit? New poll shows voters are ready

Creative Commons 1.0

According to a new poll, a majority of Michigan voters support lowering the state’s legal blood alcohol level for drivers

A new EPIC-MRA poll commissioned by the .05 Saves Lives Commission shows strong support for lowering Michigan’s blood alcohol content limit from .08 to .05.

The poll found 68% support the idea while 26% oppose and 6% are undecided.

Pollsters noted research found a blood alcohol content of .05 or higher shows impairment in judgement, coordination, balance, vision and reaction time, and that lowering the legal driving limit in 125 countries resulted in an average 11% reduction in drunk driving deaths.

President of EPIC-MRA Bernie Porn says opinions about the dangers of drunk driving have been changing over the years and now voters are ready to see this important change in Michigan driving laws.

More women than men support the change and more Democrats followed closely by Independents then Republicans.

Voters aged 65 and older are most supportive at 73%.

Liberal voters support by 81% with conservatives at 64% and moderates at 63%.

Six hundred likely November voters were surveyed.
