Grand Rapids-based economic nonprofit The Right Place has released its annual Development Report offering a snapshot of West Michigan’s real estate outlook

The Right Place’s 2026 Development Report covers West Michigan industrial, commercial office, retail, and housing real estate.

“The theme for this year is actually what we’re calling ‘Cautious Optimism.’”

Tim Mroz is Senior Vice President of Community Development at The Right Place. He says this year’s report shows a strong desire for developers to invest in West Michigan, but…

“Construction costs are continuing to rise again. We all know fuel costs are going up and, unfortunately, inflation is continuing to rise on us. We’re currently seeing about 4.2%”

Mroz says despite several lenders pulling back on construction lending, West Michigan is not only leading the state in development, but also a bright light throughout the Midwest.

“Even down towards the southern sunbelt where developers are looking for, ‘Where is our next wave of development going to be?’ and Grand Rapids is really starting to hit the map.”
