Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer stands alongside business leaders at a groundbreaking ceremony Monday

The project has faced a lot of opposition from people worried the Saline Township data center could hurt the community south of Ann Arbor

The first phase of the project is scheduled to go online early next year

A celebration took place in Saline Township Monday for a massive data center project tied to tech companies Oracle and OpenAI

Project supporters argue the data center marks the future for both Michigan and the country.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman:

“This could very well turn into the site where cancer gets cured. This could turn into the site where hundreds of millions of students around the world learn and get private tutoring, this could turn into the site where millions of small businesses can run their business with AI in the cloud.”

Opponents of the project worry AI could be a bubble, that the center could damage the environment, and hurt power grid reliability.

State officials say the Saline Township project has agreements in place to make sure Michigan residents benefit from it.
