A southeast Michigan military base is likely to receive $152M in state spending under a bill passed in the state Senate Wednesday

The money is for upgrades in support of a new mission at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

Bill sponsors argue that construction needs to get done before President Donald Trump, who approved the new mission, leaves office.

Otherwise, they fear the next administration could reverse course.

Selfridge sits in Democratic state Senator Kevin Hertel’s district. He says any president should be concerned with saving the base. But...

“I think there is a reality because of how this mission was awarded to Selfridge, it is fragile and we need to do everything we can from a state to show our commitment to getting this project done.”

Republicans had long pushed Senate Democratic leadership to take up the measure. It passed the Senate with full support.
