Peter D'Arienzo has left his position as CEO of the John Ball Zoo after the board of directors decided to "part ways" following an evaluation period.
A statement from the board reads, “We are grateful for Peter’s service and meaningful contributions to our mission over the past decade, and we wish him the very best going forward.”
D'Arienzo joined the John Ball Zoo as CEO in 2019, and was heavily involved in the planning of its proposed aquarium in Walker with projected $3.4 billion economic impact.
Last October, he was named one of the "200 Most Influential Leaders in West Michigan" by Crain’s Grand Rapids Business.
Board Chair Rob VerHeulen says the change will not impact zoo operations or efforts to bring an aquarium to Kent County and the opening of the new otter exhibit will go on as planned Memorial Day weekend.
The Board is forming a search committee to find a replacement and contracting with a national search firm specializing in zoos, aquariums, and conservation organizations.
