City aims to cut 911 confusion as Muskegon Harbor dredging resumes

Annual U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District maintenance dredging operations are scheduled to begin Friday, June 13, in the federal channel at outer Grand Haven Harbor, Michigan. The maintenance dredging will use a hydraulic dredging to place sediment in the nearshore area almost a mile south of the Grand Haven south pier to renourish eroded areas.

Muskegon city leaders want to avoid emergency calls from residents mistaking dredging equipment for a capsized boat in Muskegon harbor

Last year, Central Dispatch received dozens of calls from people mistakenly believing they saw a capsized boat in Muskegon Harbor which was actually dredging equipment.

To prevent similar confusion this season, city leaders are sharing online photos of the equipment and informing the public that dredging is about to begin.

King Company will start work in the harbor entrance late April/early May as weather permits, continuing for several weeks.

Dredging is a routine operation to maintain safe navigation for vessels in the harbor.

This year’s project will again deposit dredged material underwater off the shoreline near Pere Marquette allowing natural wave action to redistribute it over time.

City leaders don’t anticipate any impact on public beach use or city operations but want to share the information with residents and beachgoers.

Dredging updates will be posted to the city’s social media platforms.
