Lakers repeat: GVSU claims second straight NCAA Division II National Championship

Grand Valley State University’s Division II women’s basketball team won its second consecutive NCAA National Championship on Saturday

The Grand Valley State University women’s basketball team made history, beating Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Crimson Hawks 72-49 in Pittsburgh. The Lakers clinched the title for the second straight year, the third in the program’s history.

GVSU finishes the season with a 36-1 record, winning their final 15 games.

The Lakers built their biggest lead to 28 points with five and a half minutes left to play.

Paige VanStee, who earned a spot on the Elite Eight All-Tournament Team, scored a game-high 25 points, shooting nine of 11 from the floor.

Nicole Kamin earned the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.

Five graduating team members posted career records, taking part in five GLIAC regular season titles, four GLIAC Tournament titles, three Midwest Regional crowns, three trips to the Final Four, and two National Championships.
