A massive infrastructure project will transform a two-mile stretch of Apple Avenue in Muskegon

Apple Avenue is getting a major makeover from US-31 to the lakeshore, a joint effort between the Michigan Department of Transportation and the City of Muskegon.

The project modernizes aging infrastructure including asphalt reconstruction, new concrete curbs and gutters, replacement of underground water mains, sewers and updated sidewalk ramps for improved accessibility.

"This is a lot to do in one season... but it's definitely time for a reconstruct."

MDOT spokesperson John Richard explains a significant safety change converting the current four-lane road into one lane in each direction with a dedicated center left-turn lane.

“It's very beneficial because when you have that two lanes in each direction, people are trying to get through as fast as they can. So, with this dedicated left turn lane, it'll slow traffic down but still move people through. There will be increased safety.”

Richard notes businesses’ access will be maintained throughout construction, though short-term full closures may occur during resurfacing.

Drivers are encouraged to use Muskegon’s grid system to find alternate east-west routes.

Work begins April 15 and is expected to run through November.

“The first couple of weeks are always the most impactful because it catches people off guard. We have to set up the work zone. But once that's in place, people settle down.”

Project updates are at midrive@ Michigan.gov.

Residents and business owners are invited to attend an open house to ask questions and view plans Wednesday, April 1st from 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM at Muskegon City Hall.
