Democrats and Republicans nationwide are looking at the May special election to fill Michigan’s 35th district state Senate seat as a test for the upcoming midterms
Depending on which party wins, Democrats could keep their majority in the state Senate, or lose it to an even split with Republicans.
Democratic Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks says Republicans would be able to block anything they want if they win the seat.
“We still may be able to get some things done. But the truth of the matter is it would really put a halt to most things that are Democratic priorities or Democratic ideas.”
But senior Republican advisor Brian Szmitke says voters in the Saginaw-Midland-Bay City district trust his side on the everyday issues.
“These are people that are focused on putting dinner on the table, balancing their checkbook and trying to make ends meet.”
The seat has been vacant for over a year.
