The new program designed to accelerate emergency response is receiving federal funding

The Kent Safety Network will link private surveillance cameras to the Kent County Real Time Intelligence Center to provide police with live information during active incidents.

The program will allow business owners, school leaders and residents to voluntarily provide a live feed from their surveillance cameras to the sheriff’s office.

Participants can disconnect at any time.

The technology is designed to help local police agencies get real-time information and respond more effectively to emergencies as they happen.

Other access to the video would require legal procedures such as search warrants.

Thursday, U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten announced a $750,000 federal grant to cover the costs of hardware, software for the data platform, and specialized staff training.

A sign-up process for residents and business owners will be available soon through the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.
