Legacy Meets Opportunity: A former Caledonia elementary school gets a new life as a career prep center

The former Dutton Elementary will become new career and technical education hub for the Kent Intermediate School District

The Caledonia Board of Education has officially approved a purchase agreement to sell the former Dutton Elementary School in Gaines Township to the Kent Intermediate School District.

The ISD plans to build its second Career & Technical Education center on the property.

Its first center in Grand Rapids offers engineering, manufacturing, industrial technology, business, arts, and health sciences programs to 2500 current students.

The expansion will benefit Caledonia students with specialized career training and technical learning opportunities much closer to home.

A new Dutton Elementary opened last year on Patterson Avenue.

Superintendent Dirk Weeldreyer noted while the goodbye is bittersweet, the district is pleased the site will continue to serve as a hub for student development.

Residents have a final chance to tour the building, reflect on memories and see the space one last time at an open house Tuesday, February 24 from 6-7:30 p.m.
