Microsoft has yet to submit formal plans for the site

A public hearing to consider the rezoning of property in the 7000 block of Patterson Avenue Southeast in Gaines Township has been scheduled.

The meeting will take place nearly two months after the planning commission struck a rezoning item from its agenda. During that meeting, hundreds of people filled the township hall, exceeding the building’s fire code capacity and forcing the commission to postpone the meeting until a bigger venue could be secured.

According to planning commission documents, Microsoft is asking for the rezoning of 7147 Patterson to light industrial use to match the zoning of an adjacent parcel to the south. The combined parcels totaling 316 acres would support the data center. Microsoft bought the parcel from Steelcase in October 2024 for $45.3 million.

Microsoft has yet to submit formal plans for the site. It’s also eyeing acreage in Lowell Township for a potential $1 billion data center.

The public hearing will be held at Byron Center’s South Christian High School Thursday, February 12th at 6pm.
