Multi-vehicle crash shuts down I-196 in Zeeland amid dangerous winter weather

A multi-car pile-up on I-196 in Zeeland caused numerous injuries and stranded motorists and shut down the highway earlier today amid snowy weather and icy roads

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office were called to the scene of a multi-car pile-up on Interstate I-196 near 64th Avenue in Zeeland Township.

The incident began just after ten this morning. Deputies were dispatched after receiving multiple reports of numerous crashes and slide-offs in the area. The incident also included several jack-knifed semi-trucks.

Numerous injuries were reported.

Sheriff's Deputies worked with area ambulances and fire services to treat the wounded and transport them to area hospitals.

The highway was closed in both directions between the Hudsonville exit of I-196 and the Zeeland exit of I-196.

Stranded motorists had to be bussed from the scene to Hudsonville High School where they could then get a ride.

The Michigan State Police and Zeeland Police Department assisted the deputies on the scene.

The highway was closed for several hours.
