More people are registering to donate organs with new tool from Corewell Health

A new digital tool is allowing people to register to donate organs, eyes or tissue. And it’s showing significant results

Ninety percent of Americans support organ donation but only about 50% are registered, according to research by Donate Life America.

Now the group is partnering with Corewell Health and Epic, creating an alternative to registering through the Michigan Secretary of State’s office.

“Go in through your My Chart account, go to the Health Summary tab, click on the organ registration link. You can submit your information, and it will take you to the Gift of Life website, and there you can modify and check in on your registration at the national level.

Michelle Rizer is Director of Applications and Platforms at Corewell Health.

She says the tool uses existing patient data streamlining the process through their MyChart portals.

“They can choose to become a donor for transplant or research and education or both of them. So, you really have control over how you would like to be a donor.”

Once registered, a patient's status is added to the National Donate Life Registry, ensuring their donor status follows them across state lines.

“In the first three months since launching this, there have been more than 2,300 people who have signed up to be an organ donor through My Chart. Now that we're spreading the news - sharing more broadly - we're excited to see how many more folks register.”

One organ donor can save up to eight lives and heal more than 75 people through tissue donation.

Currently, nearly 2,700 people in Michigan are on transplant waiting lists.
