Students rally at Grand Valley State University, Allendale campus

Students gathered Tuesday at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, demanding administrators create “sanctuary campus” policies

“We want a proactive policy that protects international students, that protects immigrants before something bad happens.”

Owen Frassetto is with the GVSU Progressive Student Union, meeting Tuesday afternoon in front of Zumberge Hall on the Allendale campus.

The group of about 20 protested recent ICE actions in Minneapolis, seeking student support encouraging university leaders to enact sanctuary campus policies.

“No GVSU facilities, funds, information, personnel of any kind would be used to assist federal immigration enforcement activities, whether by ICE or DHS.”

Frassetto acknowledges there has been little immigration enforcement activity at GVSU outside of student visas revoked then reinstated last year but says the group wants clarity.

“We want specifically in the rules for the Grand Valley Police Department a ban on any cooperation with ICE if they were to come here and ask for assistance.”

A university spokesperson released a response, stating:

“GVSU is committed to safeguarding the rights to free speech and assembly on our campuses. Students engaging in expressive activity on our campus today are part of a long history of GVSU students passionately and peacefully advocating for causes they believe in.”
