Three veteran leaders have been announced to serve as department directors in Grand Rapids, overseeing multi-million-dollar budgets and hundreds of employees

Laura Cleypool has been named parks and recreation director after previously serving as interim and assistant director.

Cleypool will oversee the city’s parks, programming and recreational facilities with 25 years of experience in capital planning, recreation facility management and financial oversight.

Selma Tucker has been appointed community development director.

The role includes identifying solutions for systemic problems by working with community organizations, housing developers and service providers, focusing on housing affordability, urban development and inclusive community growth.

Tucker previously worked for the city, a local consulting firm and the Michigan Municipal League.

Wayne Jernberg will serve as the utilities director, overseeing water, wastewater, electric, lighting and communications services.

A licensed engineer, Jernberg has been with the city since 2006, heading the Lead Service Line Replacement program and the Lake Michigan Filtration Plant solar array project.

He currently chairs the Michigan Drinking Water Advisory Council.
