Rx Kids will keep paying new mothers and mothers-to-be, despite recent state funding cuts, but those cuts may affect future expansion

Last week, Michigan House Republicans cancelled over $18 million for the Rx Kids program. The public-private partnership offers payments to new and expecting mothers in several Michigan communities – including Kalamazoo.

Alyssa Stewart directs philanthropy for Rx kids:

“We're essentially, spending money that we were planning to spend next year in the year after. So, we're sort of overspending now to ensure no impact. So we're going to need to raise additional funds likely.”

Stewart says while member communities will continue to see funds go out to parents, the cancellation may limit Rx Kids’ ability to expand into other areas of the state.
