Meijer boosts hunger relief efforts with $4 million donation across Midwest

Meijer Inc.

Meijer is donating $4 million to food banks and pantries across the six states where the company operates stores

Citing “Midwest communities facing unique hunger challenges,” Meijer is donating $4 million total to eight food banks in Michigan, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio.

Alex Ross, Market Director for Greater Lansing, says the food banks have the size and infrastructure to make a significant impact on people in need.

“As a customer if you're interested in partnering with us to fight against hunger, by purchasing a $10 Simply Give donation card on your order during any Meijer grocery trip you can make a difference too.”

The cards are converted into food-only Meijer gift cards given to area pantries.

“Each store has a food pantry that they partner with so if you're purchasing a card in your local Meijer, it's going to go to the food bank that store partners with, typically real close to that location.”

Meijer’s “Simply Give” hunger relief program runs all year, and has donated $100 million to food pantries since 2008.

In addition, Meijer will donate the equivalent of one meal to its pantry partners for every customer who purchases a Meijer branded food item the last week of November.

Grand Rapids-based Meijer has more than 500 locations throughout the Midwest, employing more than 70,000 people.
