The vote by a divided East Grand Rapids city commission approves the concept from the Gaslight Development group to add retail, business, and residential units, and to prepare and present a final design

“Motion carries. Ok, motion carries.”

The motion to approve a concept plan for development of 8 acres in the Gaslight Village district of East Grand Rapids passed in a 4 to 3 vote.

Commissioner Kate Skaggs was a no.

“I’m not comfortable with where we are at this point.”

Commissioner Laura Schwartz a yes.

“I am confident we have put in the safeguards to let the process continue.”

The community is also divided on the plan to add 6 residential and retail buildings and a parking garage to Gaslight Village.

Bonnie Mulville is against.

“Will negatively impact the current community atmosphere from calm, welcoming to chaos.”

Bob Bonofiglo is a supporter.

“Everything grows and needs to move forward over time.”

After months of discussion and several plan revisions Mayor Katie Favale says approval of the concept means the Gaslight Development group can prepare and present a final design.

“No one knows what this will look like. We are not in the final design.”

And if a final design is presented, commissioner Bradley Hunter suggests let the voters decide.

“And let the results be what they are.”
