A bill to stop many Michigan regulations from exceeding federal standards passed in the state House of Representatives Wednesday

Republican Representative Gina Johnsen says overregulation has hurt the agriculture sector in particular.

“When the guidelines and the regulations are stricter than federal, usually they’re harmful. Usually, it impedes our freedom, to produce food in this case. You know, farming.”

But Democratic Representative Penelope Tsernglou says federal regulations don’t always account for the specific needs of the state, especially when it comes to the environment.

“Lot’s of environmental and health issues can be caused if we’re not able to enact our own standards.”

The state previously had a ‘no stricter than federal’ law. But Democrats repealed parts of it while controlling the state legislature last term.
