There’s only a week left for candidates to file in a special election that could shift the balance of power in the Michigan senate

The race is for the vacant 35th state Senate district, spanning parts of Saginaw, Bay, and Midland Counties. And most recently held by a Democrat.

Saginaw Valley State University Assistant Professor of Political Science Kevin Lorentz says he expects it to be an interesting race.

“It’s something that I don’t think either party is going to be able to lock in. They’re both going to target it. They’re both going to assume that it’s going to be a competitive race. And I also think that national head winds are going to have an impact on it as well.”

Four Democrats and two Republicans had filed for the race as of Monday evening.

The special election primary is in February and the special general election is in May.
