ArtPrize begins Thursday and, as in years past, Grand Rapids business owners are eager for the economic boost the annual art competition brings to the city

Last year, ArtPrize drew nearly 800,000 visitors, generating an estimated $71-$77 million in regional economic impact.

This year, the city is hosting 1,100 artists entering 932 works of art presented in 155 venues across 11 business districts.

Alex Benda is co-owner of Oh, Hello Company Paper & Gifts displaying the works of over 15 artists.

“Already, as a vendor and someone who’s on the back end, it’s easier for us this year. That makes us more excited because we have more capacity to plan and do more, which is what we’re planning as retailers downtown.”

Chief Marketing Officer for Gazelle Sports Cara Cross says ArtPrize is the sports outfitter’s busiest time of year.

“ArtPrize weekends beat holiday, they beat Black Friday, the beat any other day that we have with the number of people who are coming into our doors, not just from a sales perspective – people getting their shoes and their gear for moving and running and walking – but also people who have eyes on Gazelle Sports and what we do within the community.”

ArtPrize runs through October 4th.
