Water bills have increased fifty percent in Georgetown Twp.

Water rates had not increased since 2017

“It went from $315.00 to $490.00 which is a 55-percent increase.”

At a trustees meeting this month Georgetown Township resident Jim Dyke says he does not understand the big increase in his water bill.

“It doesn’t make sense to me.”

“There are other communities substantially higher than ours.”

Township manager Justin Stadt says Wyoming is Georgetown's water provider. Because residents are heavy users, the township is obligated to pay Wyoming millions of dollars to help pay for water main and infrastructure improvements.

“We have to pay for our pipes.”

And supervisor Jim Wierenga says trustees have not increased water rates since 2017.

“I regret that. I wish we had raised them sooner little by little each year. It wouldn’t have been as significant a change.”

Resident Michael Bosh thinks the township should sell bonds and borrow the money to pay for infrastructure improvements.

“Let’s bond it. There is nothing wrong with that.”

“We could borrow this, do a bond make other people who don’t live here now or maybe aren’t yet born pay for it over time or we could have the people like ourselves who are actually using the water pay for the rates. We are raising the money to keep the system going.”
