Key decision in legal case against false 2020 electors may come this week

A court hearing Tuesday may decide if some Republican Party insiders could face a trial on charges tied to the 2020 presidential election

15 people are accused of forgery and conspiracy tied to an unsuccessful effort to present themselves as official presidential electors for Donald Trump in the wake of the contentious 2020 election.

Democrat Joe Biden defeated then-and-now president Donald Trump in Michigan, meaning the state’s official presidential electors in 2020 would vote for the Democrat in the electoral college vote.

The preliminary hearing in the so-called false electors wrapped nearly a year ago.
This week’s hearing may determine whether the group of Republican insiders will have to stand trial.
