This year, communities across the state have recovered from a historic ice storm, spring tornadoes, and summer floods

The Michigan State Police along with the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division are encouraging residents to take steps to prepare for emergencies.

Throughout September State Police and the other state agencies are joining federal, state, and local governments, as well as private and public organizations, in supporting emergency preparedness initiatives. Agencies nationwide are uniting under the theme “Preparedness Starts at Home.”

Director of the MSP, Col. James F. Grady II, says in a news release, “We’ve seen how quickly severe weather and other emergencies can disrupt lives. The most effective way to protect your family is to plan ahead.”

The campaign emphasizes the importance of returning to the basics of preparedness and encourages the public to take key actions to prepare for any disaster like knowing the different types of emergencies that could happen and appropriate responses to stay safe, you can make a family emergency plan and create an emergency supply kit.

Officials are collaborating to commemorate Michigan’s Preparedness Month with Muskegon County which will host the 2025 Prepare Fair on September 30th.
