"Meet the Meat" initiative pairs Wolverine Building Group with Kent County Youth Fair to feed those in need, 2024

Wolverine Building Group will meet up with young farmers from the Kent County Youth Fair to deliver fresh food to three local nonprofit organizations

The initiative is called “Meet the Meat” and the concept is simple: Wolverine Building Group buys livestock at auction from the Kent County Youth Fair, has it processed and then teams up with the kids to delivers it to Guiding Light, 70x7 Life Recovery and Degage Ministries.

Those nonprofits serve people facing homelessness, recent release from incarceration, addiction recovery and poverty.

Jim Chambers is senior project manager at Wolverine and a volunteer mentor for the Kent County Youth Fair.

He says the program is a way for young people to see how their efforts can impact their community.

“We try to involve them as much as possible because this is actually a learning experience for them that all their hard work and everything, they put in over the summer is actually paying off to help other people in need.”

Employees from Wolverine Building Group and teens from the Youth Fair will also tour the nonprofits to learn about the services they offer and the people they help.

“They really do enjoy it and the best part is then they bring it back and they share that story with their friends and with their clubs through the 4H and that type of thing so it's an ongoing sharing effort.”
