“You received seven emails and letters in favor of this rezoning. You received 52 emails and letters that were opposing this. I am also opposing this.”
Despite concerns from nearby residents and business owners voiced at its latest meeting, the Grand Rapids Planning Commission unanimously approved a special land use permit allowing Matthew’s House Ministry to move its headquarters from 7th Street Northwest to the 700 block of Leonard Street Northwest.
“We feel these services are lacking on the west side of Grand Rapids, and Matthew’s House has been a presence for 18 years.”
Matthew’s House Executive Director Pastor George Werkema said their organization serves 80 to 100 people a day, and the vacant 8,300-square-foot building is better suited to help the area’s homeless population.
Critics have cited concerns that the nonprofit negatively impacts nearby residential and commercial properties along the Leonard Street corridor. But Matthew’s House volunteer Edward Quakenbush points out that many unhoused individuals already frequent the area, and the nonprofit must meet the homeless where they are.
“We’re providing good services. We are not the enemy here. We are a source of trying to solve the problem, not make it worse.”
No word yet on when Matthew’s House plans to move into its new facility.
