This new consumer alert follows a complaint to the Department of Attorney General from Eastern Michigan University or EMU, which reported that a website called smich.education was using the name Southeastern Michigan University to invoke EMU’s reputation and credibility to lure prospective students.
The website is not connected to EMU. While the Department reviews potential actions against the website, Attorney General Nessel urges prospective students to refrain from providing any personal or financial information to the site.
AG Nessel says quote, “If something seems suspicious or too good to be true, do your homework before sharing any personal information.” End quote.
The office says a fake college or university website may have things like wrong or missing contact information, a domain that does not end in dot-edu or offers strange ways to pay. They advise prospective students targeted by fraudulent websites to, find college information yourself, don’t trust phone numbers or emails right out the gate and look up the school independently. Also, check to see if a college is accredited.
You can check that by looking it up on the U.S. Department of Education’s website.
