Affordable housing planned for former Muskegon General Hospital site

Hilary Farrell

Demolition of the shuttered Muskegon General Hospital is underway

Last week, the Muskegon City Commission approved a commercial rehabilitation district for 1700 Oak Avenue in Muskegon.

“If that address is familiar to you all, it’s the former general hospital site.”

Jocelyn Hines is Development Analyst for the city of Muskegon. She explains plans put forth by Muskegon-Central Park LLC, a subsidiary of East Lansing-based developer Krimson LLC.

“They are planning to build six new three-story, multifamily housing on this site with an investment of about $21 million and it is receiving support from the state as it will be considered low-income housing according to MSHDA standards.”

Muskegon General Hospital, which sits on nearly 14 acres, closed in 2020. Once demolition of the hospital is complete, Krimson expects construction of 144 apartments to begin in early September.

Second Ward Commissioner Willie German Jr. encouraged the hiring of local, minority contractors and workers for construction.

“I’m not seeing a lot of that on a lot of these projects. I know we talk about them, but I’m not seeing the actual boots on the ground when it comes to a lot of local contractors in the city of Muskegon.”

More information about the project is expected from developers at the city commission’s August 12th meeting.
