Low-income Consumers Energy electric and natural gas customers who qualify for State Emergency Relief funds may also qualify for additional assistance under a new Michigan Department of Health and Human Services policy

State Emergency Relief funds help income-qualified customers with paying off past due energy bills up to $500. The one-time federal funds disbursed at the state level are given to customers whose household income is 150% of the federal poverty level or below.

“Customers who are already qualified for State Emergency Relief dollars and haven’t taken advantage of that full $500 annual payment benefit may actually now qualify for additional money.”

Media Relations Specialist for Consumers Energy Matt Johnson explains how the updated policy works.

“For example, if you took advantage of a $250 past due balance that the State Emergency Relief dollars helped you pay, typically you would have been capped at that, but now you can actually go back and get another $250 up to that full $500.”

Last year, 54,000 customers received $38.4 million in State Emergency Relief funding.
