Lowell Light and Power gets state grant to promote solar energy projects

Kent County-based Lowell Light and Power has one of only eight projects in Michigan chosen as pilots in the “MI Solar for All” program.

The state is awarding nearly $8 million to launch projects that bring solar energy to low-income households and communities statewide.

It’s part of a federal initiative administered through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

Lowell Light and Power will install high visibility solar canopies over the main parking lot at Stoney Lakeside Park.

The company will also offer community education demonstrating how residents can save money on utility bills with an opt-out plan.

The “MI Solar for All” program offered grants for residential rooftop solar projects and community solar projects.

Program leaders expect participants will save an average of 20% on their electricity bills.

The Michigan Health Climate Challenge is now accepting applications for the next round of grants for projects that build momentum around clean energy initiatives, focusing on projects with local governments, community lenders, schools, faith organizations, nonprofits, and solar providers.
