“This bill is anything but a responsible budget, and at a time when the affordability crisis is crippling the American dream, it is essential that we push back on this.”
Grand Rapids U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten was joined by Democratic colleagues, Kalamazoo State Senator Sean McCann and Grandville State Representative Carol Glanville, in speaking out on the impacts ‘The One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ will have on Michiganders. Senator McCann:
“This bill is going to create serious healthcare access problems in the state of Michigan, and especially in rural Michigan, where hospitals have up to 40% of their patients be Medicaid patients.”
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the state will lose $1.1 billion annually from the federal government, causing 700,000 Medicaid beneficiaries to lose coverage. Representative Glanville:
“So, we’re not even talking about folks who might be on assistance, right? That counts for 37% of households here in the Kent County area, and statewide, that number’s just a little bit higher at 41%. So many folks in Michigan are right on the edge, and that means thousands of households do rely on Medicaid and SNAP to keep their kids healthy and fed.”
The Michigan State Budget Office estimates a $900 million cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program impacting 1.5 million people or 15% of Michiganders. More than 59% of its recipients are families with children.
