“So, we have a lot of steps in front of us. We’ve gotten to this point because we really like the site at Ball Street and we’ve taken several looks at it over the years.”
Jason Wheeler, spokesperson for Wheeler Development Group, says they are asking the Grand Rapids Planning Commission to approve a special land-use request to build the development in a low-density residential district.
The project would require tearing down the former Huff Park Elementary School to construct three 24-unit buildings on the site.
“Another thing that we like about this site right now is the proximity to the park across the street and the New City Neighbors farm that borders this property line.”
Though the development is still in the planning stages, Wheeler says consideration is being made to include affordable housing units.
“Typically, what we do is begin marching forward with the state incentives, better identify what type of cost structure and what type of rent structure needs to be in place for us to have a mix of affordable apartments and market-rate apartments.”
The Grand Rapids Planning Commission is holding a public hearing on the project at its July 10th meeting.
