The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy has confirmed another PFAS contamination site in Comstock Park near the Grand River

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy announced Tuesday that the property at 4724 West River Drive in Comstock Park was declared a PFAS contamination site.

The property at the corner of West River Drive and West River Center was last used as Eastbrook Auto Wash, which is less than a mile north of LMCU Ballpark and about 2,000 feet from the Grand River.

EGLE was notified that the property owner had conducted a baseline environmental assessment, where temporary monitoring wells were installed on the property. Those wells found levels of two PFAS compounds above state safety standards.

The monitoring wells showed 21 parts per trillion of PFOS, or perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, above the state maximum contaminant level of 16 ppt. They also showed 25 ppt of PFOA, or polyfluorooctanoic acid. The state MCL for that compound is 8 ppt.

Baseline environmental assessments are commonly done by property owners to document preexisting contamination and avoid being held liable for future potential findings.
